#JAMMU: The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is likely to receive widespread rain and thundershowers over the next few days, with the Weather Department forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the Jammu division today.

The Meteorological Department said that the wet spell is expected to intensify today, when heavy to very heavy rain could occur at a few places in Jammu, while some areas of Kashmir may experience short-duration intense showers. According to the forecast, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely at most places across Jammu and Kashmir with the highest activity expected during the day and night.

The weather office has specifically warned that one or two locations could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the night. Intense or torrential showers may lead to flash floods in vulnerable areas and trigger landslides, mudslides and waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas. The advisory comes amid an active monsoon phase in the Union Territory, where intense rainfall has triggered flash floods and landslides at several locations in recent weeks.

The weather is likely to remain unsettled thereafter, with light rain and thundershowers expected at many places from August 12 to 16. Brief spells of intense rain cannot be ruled out at isolated locations during this period.
